How to Fill Cracks Made By Joint Compound When Filling Gaps

If you were working with joint compound and now you have cracks in it, there is an easy way to remedy that. Here are a few quick steps that can help you through the process.

Step 1 - Mix the Compound

Begin by mixing the joint compound in a bucket with water. Follow the instructions, making sure that the mixture isn't too watery.

Step 2 - Apply Compound

Now that the compound has been mixed, you can apply it to the cracks. Make sure this time that you are getting the mixture into the cracks by using the putty knife. Use the putty knife to then spread it out evenly.

Step 3 - Sand

Now that it has been applied, you want to make sure that the compound is dry. There should be an amount of time given in the instructions, however you will want to wait at least about 8 hours to make sure that it has dried completely. It is important to do this because touching the compound too soon will cause cracking and you will have to begin the process all over again. Once it is dry, you can use a piece of sand paper to smooth it out.
